I want to create a page on googlepages and sign up with adsense. Of course the number of hits varies hugely, but what's a reasonable number for a semi-decent site. Also, do people actually make money on this, or are the people making good money just a minority, with most people getting about 5 cents a month? Are there any catches to Google Adsense. Is there a better way to make a webpage for free than with googlepages? Thanks.

There are many more publishers earning less than $100 a month for a variety of reasons -- lack of traffic, wrong content for Adsense, wrong visitor type for Adsense, poor implementation of ads. One thing about Adsense that many do not understand is that Adsense works -- IF AND ONLY IF you have the right site for Adsense. For the right website, Adsense can give you $10,000 a month or more very easily. But if not, you'll struggle to earn only pennies a month. There's no "reasonable" or right amount of traffic. A site can only get 100,000 pageviews per month and earn $15,000 while another site getting 1 million a month earns only $500. While traffic is important, traffic is not the most important determinant with Adsense. The key is whether your site is the end destination of the visitors and they're finding all the information they need and want in your site. Think of a forum or a news site or gossip site -- all of these will attract visitors whose main objective is to chat, read news or read gossip. They're not thinking of anything else when going to your site except to go to your site. These types of sites get low CPM, low CTR and consequently, low revenues Compare that to a product review site, which provides reviews of a particular product (say camera). Visitors of these sites come because they are in the market for buying a camera, but before they do so they'd like to compare makes and models. The audiences this type of site gets are going to be responsive to the ads shown, which if the targeting is right, will be vendors of cameras. So product review sites do extremely well with Adsense The key is content and finding out what type of audiences will go visit your site. Then build traffic. It will not be easy, but if you do well, then it feels great

Here is a link to one of my blog posts about how much money some people have been making with adsense:http://theadsenseconsultant.blogspot.com... That list contains people who are making upwards of $100,000 a year using adsense! Personally I think that you should start small and work your way up. I say this because I think that you really have to get a "feel" for adsense. Once you sign up with them and they approve your site you can log in to your account to see how money you have earned but more importantly you will see which of your ads are earning you more (and less). And then you work on increasing your earnings by knowing this kind of information. A good "starting" goal would be for you to earn at least the minimum $100 a month because that is the amount that you will need to earn to get your adsense payment the next month. There is a poll on my blog asking people how much they have been making with adsense so far and it seems that the majority of people who have answered the poll are making less than $10 a month. Personally I have been able to make the monthly minimum ($100) so far for 2008 and all of 2007. About the only real "catch" to adsense is that you will have to follow their terms of service. If you don't then your adsense account will be cancelled and very few people have managed to get their adsense account back after it has been cancelled. A very big "no-no" is clicking on your own ads which adsense frowns upon and clicking on your own adsense ads is a big violation and it could get your adsense account cancelled. Adsense has very good tracking and technical "thingies" that monitor where clicks are coming from so they can kind of know which clicks are invalid.

You can make a lot more money by putting your own ads on your site for affiliate products than by selling your traffic away for pennies. Let's say your site is about hot cell phones. Someone comes to it, sees an ad about the cell phone, and clicks off of your site and you get a few cents. But put your own link to the merchant on there and if the person buys a phone after clicking on your link, you get $50 or more. If someone else is making money with the adsense ads on your site, you can too and a lot more than by selling your traffic to someone else (which is what adsense does).
